Flying Start @ Marjon and a Sensory Circle Time!

Flying Start @ Marjon’s staff have recently attended some special educational needs training along with other Flying Start staff.

This training explored children’s different sensory needs and how as practitioners we can better facilitate children’s learning by helping to make them feel comfortable and supported.

The training was very informative and the staff at Marjon have used it to create sensory learning experiences for all children!

Marjon sensory box

The children initially explored the sensory box in a circle time, using their hands to touch the different textures and exploring which made them feel comfortable and which they did not like touching. The older children could use descriptive words to explain and voice their opinions, likes and dislikes as well as describing what they could feel.

The children then explored their senses, using their eyes to see, hands to touch, noses to smell and ears to hear.

The objects for exploration included soft furry toys, scented candles, light up toys, coloured objects, hard rubber, soft rubber toys and lots more!

The children learnt that some objects might make a child feel safer to play, they might like to hold on to it and make it flash or smell it or stroke it when they felt uncertain.

Have a go at making a sensory box at home! A shoe box and some interesting items are all you need.. it can be a great talking point with the children, you can even play blindfolded games to guess the usual house hold objects and encourage your child’s verbal descriptions! Send us a photo!
