This week we’ve been learning about hermit crabs and how they sometimes line up in size order to swap shells when a bigger one becomes available!

Today, we organised our own seashells by size before decorating them with watercolours.

After giving the pond a little clean, we returned the newts and continued this learning opportunity by researching how to care for them.

‘Illogan in Bloom’ are very kindly working their magic (and green fingers) on our Nursery garden!
The team of amazing volunteers visited this morning and got stuck in right away with weeding, planting, and re-potting.
The children were very excited and eager to help and learn.

At Illogan, we recently had the delightful opportunity to celebrate “World Bee Day”!
Throughout the week, the children have participated in a variety of stimulating and engaging activities that have allowed them to explore and understand the fascinating world of bees.
They have learned about the structure and function of beehives, the process of making honey, and the crucial role that bees play in maintaining the health of our ecosystems.
It has been heartwarming to see how the children have really engaged with the topics, thriving as they expand their knowledge about these vital pollinators that are essential for our planet’s wellbeing.

In May, Flying start’s Flora celebrated her 33rd birthday!
The staff and children had a wonderful garden celebration at Illogan for the company’s special day.
The children created a sensory birthday cake for Flora, participated in some delightful dancing in the rain, and made their own birthday cards for her.

Flying start @ Illogan have been learning about recycling and reusing everyday materials to help care for our planet. The children helped to make their own natural paints from coffee grounds and mud and used repurposed bubble wrap to paint on. They explored textures and patterns while getting creative and being eco-friendly!

Flying Start @ Illogan Look After The Local Wildlife!

Flying Start @ Illogan are helping to look after the local wildlife! With melted lard, we’ve mixed oats, sultanas, and sunflower seeds together to make a nutritious treat for our garden birds. After we finished making the fat balls and pinecone bird feeders, we used our bird identification sheets to see which birds visited our garden!

Safe Sleep Reassurance

You may have seen the recent news sharing the best advice and updating requirements for safe sleeping for babies and young children, this has always been a priority at Flying Start Nurseries.
To help reassure you we just wanted to remind you that:
  • When babies go to bed we remove their outer clothing, jumpers and hoodies, bibs, dummy clips and anything too tight on their necks
  • We check the room temperature and make sure it is a comfortable temperature between 16-20 degrees
  • We place babies on their backs with their feet at the bottom of the cot
  • We allow the use of well fitting sleeping bags if parents want to supply them
  • We check their temperature, breathing, and general wellbeing regularly and record these checks
  • Older babies or children may sleep on a sleep mat, if so, they are constantly supervised by a qualified staff member
We are making a slight change to our procedure and will be resharing our policy with parents via the app, but to let you know, if babies under a year fall asleep on a walk we will always transfer them from the pram to a cot as it is safer. If children aged over 1 fall asleep in our prams, if possible we will lay the pram flat and remove/open outer clothing on their return to the setting closely supervising them sleeping.
We have made this watertight in our procedure and policy to make sure safe sleeping is always thought about!
