This week we’ve been learning about hermit crabs and how they sometimes line up in size order to swap shells when a bigger one becomes available!
Today, we organised our own seashells by size before decorating them with watercolours.

We’ve begun to create a home learning borrow bag library!
Packed with fun, hands-on activities, each borrow bag supports different areas of our curriculum and helps develop school readiness skills.
Families are welcome to borrow a bag, enjoy the activities at home and swap it for a different one when they’re ready.
Flying Start @ Illogan Use Beach Treasure To Learn Maths!
Pre-School has been exploring maths using ten frames and beach treasure!
Using beautiful seashells and pebbles kindly collected by our families from local beaches, the children have been practising counting,
matching quantities to numerals, and recognising numbers.
Flying Start @ Illogan Have Grown Potatoes!
Today we harvested the potatoes that we’ve been growing since March!
The children were so excited to finally harvest them and were extremely proud.
Instead of cooking them at nursery, each child took a few potatoes home as they were so excited to show their families.
Flying Start @ Illogan Enter The Scarecrow Competition – And Come 2nd!
We have entered the parish scarecrow competition!
The children were all very excited to help create our entry.
Using second-hand clothing, sticks, and hay, we have crafted a scarecrow inspired by a famous book character.

We are very proud to say that we came 2nd in the competition! Well done everyone on your hard work.
Flying Start @ Illogan Are Pond Explorers!
The children at Illogan have been taking care of our pond, and look who we discovered living in it!
After giving the pond a little clean, we returned the newts and continued this learning opportunity by researching how to care for them.
Flying Start @ Illogan Are Working With Their Local Community!
‘Illogan in Bloom’ are very kindly working their magic (and green fingers) on our Nursery garden!
The team of amazing volunteers visited this morning and got stuck in right away with weeding, planting, and re-potting.
The children were very excited and eager to help and learn.
We’re looking forward to working with the team & seeing our garden transformation!
Flying Start @ Illogan Celebrate World Bee Day!
At Illogan, we recently had the delightful opportunity to celebrate “World Bee Day”!
Throughout the week, the children have participated in a variety of stimulating and engaging activities that have allowed them to explore and understand the fascinating world of bees.
They have learned about the structure and function of beehives, the process of making honey, and the crucial role that bees play in maintaining the health of our ecosystems.
It has been heartwarming to see how the children have really engaged with the topics, thriving as they expand their knowledge about these vital pollinators that are essential for our planet’s wellbeing.
Flying Start @ Illogan Had A Party!
In May, Flying start’s Flora celebrated her 33rd birthday!
The staff and children had a wonderful garden celebration at Illogan for the company’s special day.
The children created a sensory birthday cake for Flora, participated in some delightful dancing in the rain, and made their own birthday cards for her.
