Safe Sleep Reassurance

You may have seen the recent news sharing the best advice and updating requirements for safe sleeping for babies and young children, this has always been a priority at Flying Start Nurseries.
To help reassure you we just wanted to remind you that:
  • When babies go to bed we remove their outer clothing, jumpers and hoodies, bibs, dummy clips and anything too tight on their necks
  • We check the room temperature and make sure it is a comfortable temperature between 16-20 degrees
  • We place babies on their backs with their feet at the bottom of the cot
  • We allow the use of well fitting sleeping bags if parents want to supply them
  • We check their temperature, breathing, and general wellbeing regularly and record these checks
  • Older babies or children may sleep on a sleep mat, if so, they are constantly supervised by a qualified staff member
We are making a slight change to our procedure and will be resharing our policy with parents via the app, but to let you know, if babies under a year fall asleep on a walk we will always transfer them from the pram to a cot as it is safer. If children aged over 1 fall asleep in our prams, if possible we will lay the pram flat and remove/open outer clothing on their return to the setting closely supervising them sleeping.
We have made this watertight in our procedure and policy to make sure safe sleeping is always thought about!
If families need any advice or support, talk to baby staff in the nursery and take a look at The Lullaby Trust.

To kick start our growing mission and re-inspire us all after so much rain, we have signed up for our children to receive exciting post each month from POT GANG!

We have started with seedling potatoes, herbs, and strawberries..
The start of the month has become very exciting, because we don’t know what is coming next!
Watch this space for updates… and do share photos with your nursery or on your child’s learning story of anything you have growing at home, we would love to show the children.

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Enjoy the Snow

The Toddlers at Cornwall College LOVED the recent snow!
We all wrapped up super warm with our coats, hats and gloves and explored the crunchy snow!
We made little snowballs, stamped our feet to make patterns and even managed to make a little snow man!
We had some warm milk to warm up inside and then explored some more ice in our tray! We talked about how ice turns into water when it warms up, and got to watch it all melt!
We had so much fun!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Bonfire Night

The Toddlers @ Flying Start Cornwall College had the best time learning about fireworks! We used some different coloured paint and super big movements to make our own fireworks in the garden! We also practised our colour mixing and printing to make our own beautiful pictures inside! Well done Toddlers!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Continue Exploring the World

Our adventures with Captain Sandy Seagull have continued @ Flying Start Cornwall College, and the children were thrilled to discover that she has now left Germany and flown all the way to Vietnam! Together, we travelled alongside her, exploring this new country and learning about some of the wonderful things that make it special.
The children were fascinated by the bright and bold design of the Vietnamese flag, noticing its striking red background and golden star. We talked about what these colours represent and created our own flag-inspired art to celebrate.
As Captain Sandy wrote about the importance of the harvest in Vietnam, we focused especially on rice, which is such an important food in the country. The children enjoyed finding out how rice is grown and harvested, and we linked this to discussions about the foods we eat every day.
We also explored the clever design of bamboo bridges, learning how they help people travel across rivers. The children used their problem-solving skills and creativity to design and build their own versions in the classroom, experimenting with balance and strength.
To finish off our adventure, the children made their very own treasure maps, carefully marking out paths, rivers and “hidden treasures” along the way. This activity encouraged imagination, storytelling and map-reading skills, helping the children think like real explorers.
We are so excited to see where Captain Sandy Seagull will fly to next, and what new adventures and learning opportunities will be waiting for us!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Sun Safety

The Preschool children @ Flying Start Cornwall College have been busy learning all about beach safety.
We spoke about all the ways we can stay safe when visiting the beach, including learning the mantra “Slip, Slop, Slap” when we worked on our ability to put on our own sun cream and hats.
We also have been working together to make some of the flags we may see when we visit the beach and spoke about what each one means and who to search out if we ever get lost.

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Explore the Jungle

Day Nursery Two have been having the best time reading Rumble in the Jungle and learning all about different jungle animals! We have been learning the different animals names, feeding our animals and using our voices to experiment with different animal sounds!
We have been using our hands and our imagination to make some amazing artwork too! Our handprint giraffes look great and we can’t wait to put them all up on display!
We have also been exploring our local area, taking some yummy fruit with us to enjoy!

Day Nursery 1 @ Cornwall College LOVE a story.

Over the last term we have been introducing the children’s favourite stories into our planning. This has been a great way to support our little ones with their Communication and Language, all whilst keeping them engaged with their love of books!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Preparing for School

The Upper preschool at Cornwall College have been working on key skills we need to know by the time we go to school. This has run alongside our book of the week ‘my first day at school’. We have been working on skills such as our number recognition, fine motor skills and our letters and sounds.
