Flying Start @ Penryn and Their Parent Pizza Chef!

Flying Start @ Penryn have recently made Pizza’s with their Parent Pizza Chef!

The children were very fortunate that one of the Dad’s not only was a whizz with all things dough and pizza, but also that he had a morning off work and was happy to come and teach the children his skills! Thankyou Jamie!

Flying Start @ Penryn Toddler Parents Stay, Play, Bake, Dance, Sing and Story Tell!

Flying Start @ Penryn had a ‘Stay and Play’ session this week with their Toddler Parents and Carers!

Lots of parents came in to see their child playing at nursery, join in with and learn their daily routine at nursery, meet their toddler friends and other parents as well as joining in with lots of fun activities with their child.

The parents/carers initially started by signing in with their child finding their photo and sticking it up to know they were here, then moved on to a choice of jiggly tots singing and dancing games, cooking club, sticking and creating natural pictures, outdoor play and then finally snack time!

Children and Parents/Carers whipped up a storm at the cooking table! Baking buns together which of course were then decorated and tasted.

penryn stay and play wow moments

Some parents took the opportunity to write WOW moments of their child’s achievements at home, or fill in home observations explaining their play and learning at home, which their key worker could use to link in to their learning and plan their next steps at nursery.

Thankyou to all parents, carers and relatives who attended the Stay and Play, your involvement in your child’s learning and play is essential to the nursery’s aim to deliver quality care and education.

Flying Start @ Camborne Practice Their Writing Skills In Unusual Ways…

Flying Start @ Camborne have been practicing their writing skills by threading!

camborne writing practice

Using these threading boards, the children use a pen device to thread in and out, leaving the mark of their wool.

This mark making requires good control and hand eye coordination, which develops fine motor skills required for writing!

Fantastic patterns are also being made, noticing colours and shapes as well as a strong hand grip!

Flying Start @ Duchy Introduce ‘Sign of the Week’!

Flying Start @ Duchy have introduced a ‘sign of the week’, for all staff, parents and children to learn and use to aid communication.

The signs are ‘makaton’ signs, and support Early Language development as well as inclusive practice for children who may join the nursery with audio impairments.

This week the sign is ‘Yes’: This is a knocking motion!

See how below…

Flying Start @ Cornwall College link sensory play across the curriculum

Flying Start @ Cornwall College have been exploring and experimenting with lots of different sensory items, including:

rice, pasta, sand, clay, water, paints, lentils ETC!

In the baby department the sensory play is linked to physical development and encouraging fine motor skills, pincer grasps to pick up small grains, spoons to transport and balance and using brushes and sponges to experiment with textures and consistencies!

CC babies sensory

In the toddlers they have been spending lots of time outside, splashing in water trays, exploring the mud and digging areas and painting with water in the sunshine!

In the preschool department the children have been exploring their sensory with a mathematics hat on! Measuring, weighing, pouring, filling and emptying containers of different shapes and sizes.

Flying Start @ Penryn Pass It On…

Flying Start @ Penryn Pass On their recipes!

Penryn baby cooking Penryn baby cooking 1

The Preschool and Holiday Club children shared their recipe, ingredients and knowledge with the Toddler children to help them cook.

The children made spring rolls, adding chopped vegetables and ingredients to their filo pastry which had been carefully cut by the older children to a rectangle.

When their ingredients were carefully placed in the middle of their pastry they were instructed to roll it up, with a demo from the holiday clubbers!

When their spring rolls were all rolled up and ready for the oven they had a quick brush of milk and baked to a golden brown where all the children could then enjoy a delicious freshly baked afternoon snack!

The Afterschool children are planning to create a Cook Book in time for Christmas.. if you have any recipes please email them in to penrynfs@hotmail.co.uk

Flying Start @ Duchy Explore The Light Tent!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s babies explore the lights, shapes, colours and patterns projected within the cosy light tent.

Duchy light box

Each half term the Flying Start Nurseries get an exciting delivery of ICT resources, that swap between all of the nurseries throughout the year. Meaning that the children get to explore lots of different and exciting resources!

This half term Duchy have a light tent and projector, to create shapes, colour patterns and lava lamp effects within the tent or onto big wall space.

Duchy’s challenge is to add something interesting to their ICT box for the children to enjoy exploring with the tent and lights… any suggestions?!

Flying Start @ Penryn Pasty Bakers!

Flying Start @ Penryn get a special Pasty expert to teach them how to bake proper Cornish Pasties…

Penryn pasties

Our expert was Sophia’s Nan who has been baking pasties for 60 years!

Gerry taught the children how to roll out their pastry into a big circle and then put their onion, potato, turnip and mince beef (used for ease with little fingers) into the middle of their circle.

Penryn pasties2

When every child had done this it was time to fold the pastry and keep all the ingredients in the middle, the children had to listen and watch Gerry’s demonstration very carefully as it is quite tricky!

Penryn pasties 3

When they had folded the pastry over the children used their fingers to squeeze it all together  at the top, and then trial crimping.

By squeezing the pastry tightly shut the children used a ‘fold and stick, fold and stick’ mantra to fold over the top of the crust to make a crimping effect – really good concentration and fine motor skills were required!

Penryn pasties 4

Finally after a stint in the oven, the tasty pasties were ready … one LARGE pasty was cut up for snack time and the children all took cocktail pasties home.

Welldone All! Thankyou Gerry for sharing your culinary secrets!
