Flying Start Nurseries Have Signed Up To End Mental Health Stigma!

Flying Start Nurseries have signed up to the ‘Time To Change’ initiative!

As a company we are pledging to end mental health stigma.

We are working towards being a more ‘mental health aware’ company, so that our staff are well supported and our children learn about mental health as well as physical health through their play and feel safe and supported in doing so.

So far we have revised our Stress Management policy that all staff follow and Directors and Managers company wide are undertaking specialist Mental Health Awareness Qualifications, to increase their knowledge of mental health symptoms, signs and illnesses and create a skill set to better support their own staff team.

We are also developing wellness walls, comfort corners and special circle time resources … these initiatives are up and coming to keep your eye on the blog for more information!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College’s Outdoor Cooking!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College have developed an Outdoor Kitchen…

To support outdoor play in this lovely weather and develop pretend play and using the children’s imaginations an outdoor kitchen is in action!

16.4.15 008 16.4.15 007

The children use pots, saucepans, spoons, whisks, jugs, baking sheets, bun trays and anything else they can to mix, stir and create potions, cakes, pies…you name it, it can be created!

The children have access to a water butt full of water as a key ingredient in their cooking, and also use compost, leaves, petals and bark chips to have lots of different textures and make different consistencies.

The garden has also been being developed by clearing the flower bed and refreshing the area with fresh compost, and different herbs and plants.

The garden is really starting to come together! If you want to come and help out or add anything to our lovely nursery garden please just speak to your keyworker!

Would you like to come for afternoon snack with your child? Just ask your key worker, whether its joining in our real snack time, or a baking activity or a pretend tea party… the children are getting really involved in all of this and drawing on their experiences at home to lead their play and imagination!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Are Trying To Fight Germs!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College are having a BLAST on germ control and teaching the children about health and hygiene!

It is that time of year again where all of the naughty germs and infections come out to challenge our immunise systems…which is good to build healthy children and with good immunity but it it also very important we try to educate the children on protecting themselves and keeping well!

We have been having some fun sessions in preschool to remind the children the importance of their daily hygiene routines…

Starting with some warm water, then rub-a-dub-scrub scrub scrubbing until we make bubbles with the soap…

Making sure the fronts, backs and between the fingers have bubbles on them!

Then a big wash off and thorough dry.

Then after lunch we scrub a dub dub our teeth until the toothpaste is bubbly on our tongues and teeth!

Baby Bear, Mummy Bear and Daddy Bear…. The 3 Bears and Goldilocks came for snack!

With a big pot of steamy Porridge the Bears and Goldilocks shared some snack and their story.

The children served themselves some porridge and discussed how much they were eating…was it a baby size, mummy size or daddy sized portion?!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College Babies Book Day!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College had great fun on World Book Day 2015!

The children and staff dressed up as their favourite book character and lots of children also brought in their favourite book from home to share with their friends.

The activities for the day were all themed around story books and characters....

In the baby room the children used the story ‘We are Going On a Bear Hunt’ to act out, to go on a bear hunt in the garden taking their shoes and socks off and feeling the grass, mud, sand and gloop on their toes!

Then inside they had a ‘Bear Hunt’ sensory tray, which as you can see in the pictures was used to explore with their fingers lots of different textures and move little pretend people through the different areas as the story was being read providing a very hands on and visual story time.

Flying Start @ Cornwall College and Redruth Join Together For A Day!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College had some visitors from Flying Start @ Redruth on Friday the 13th!

Unfortunately the Redruth nursery had some structural damage from bad weather and rain and was not suitable for the children…a spot of Friday 13th bad magic possibly!

However this worked out in the favour for the children at both Cornwall College and from Redruth who joined together for a day of fun!

CCbiscuits

It started with cooking clubs, younger children baked heart shaped valentines shortbread, whilst the older children baked cheese scones for snack time!

Then the older children went out for a walk, over to Pets At Home…

The children viewed reptiles in their tanks, spotted hamsters hiding and even were able to pet some furry friends!

The children seemed to really enjoy having some other Flying Start friends….so lets hope there is no more weather damage, but lots more joining together opportunities!

Thankyou to all parents and carers, who accommodated the change so willingly and helped us calm an unexpected situation!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College’s Weekly Forest School!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College’s Toddler Department have been exploring woodland areas to enhance their learning experiences.

The children go weekly on the Cornwall College campus to a lovely woodland forest area, where they look for natural objects, listen for birds, squirrels and other wildlife and engage in activities covering all areas of learning.CC tods forest

Turning rocks, looking under branches, on top of tree stumps and through the leaves the children find woodlice, worms, slugs, snails and lots of interesting natural objects!

This week the children stuck them onto their sticky face plates… using bark, leaves, soil and greenery to make facial expressions, which is what they have been focusing on at nursery using mirrors and emotion cards.

I wonder what next week will bring?

Flying Start @ Cornwall College’s Concentration and Fine Motor Skills!

Flying Start @ Cornwall College’s Preschoolers have been focusing their concentration on their fine motor skills.

Using large grip tweezers and tongs, the children have been experimenting with different objects they can pick up…

CC tweezers2 CCtweezers

The children went to the woods and found sticks, leaves, pine cones and little acorn shells, and then tried using the tweezers to transport the materials across the sensory tray and into different containers.

The children had good fun trying to get very small or strange shaped objects into the pots, this worked their fine motor control, hand eye coordination, and hand strength as well as increased concentration!

Why not try at home with cooking tongs? Can your child move an orange, a pencil or a sock?! Why not set up races at home and see who can do it the quickest?!
