Flying Start @ Penryn’s Going To School Roleplay!

The preschool children from Flying Start @ Penryn are starting to get ready for school…

They are making a display that shows which local primary school each child is going to and what the school looks like, and are visiting the closest school Penryn Primary weekly. These visits are a good start to transitioning the children going to this school but also good for the other children to get a feel for primary school, using the library and ICT suite and playing in the playground with lots of school children!

At nursery the children are creating a role play area focused on going to school, with whiteboards and name writing practice, school words for discussion points and soon to be children’s uniform for dressing up!

The children have been looking at photographs and books of schools from around the world and noticing the differences in different countries and religions.

Daily access to child initiated school themed play is the start of their journey into school!

Flying Start @ Duchy Are Going On A … BUG… Hunt!

Flying Start @ Duchy are not on a bear hunt but a bug hunt at this time of year!

Hoping that the lovely weather has enticed the bugs to come out to play, the pre-schoolers have been out on a bug hunt.

Using their tick charts with pictures and words the children look in the leaves, bushes, undergrowth and under anything they find to look for creepy crawlies and tick them off!

Flying Start @ Penryn’s Painting is Healthy!

Flying Start @ Penryn have been exploring healthy eating and healthy living with the toddlers… even to the extent of their paintings!

The children have got a Stokes Fruit and Vegetable Shop as their roleplay, learning where fruit and veg come from and how they are grown, role playing buying different real fruit and vegetables and even exploring soil and planting seeds in their sensory trays!

They then have been cutting up some of the fruit and vegetables from their shop to do some interesting fruit printing…

The children are learning how to be healthy from all angles!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s Real Life Experiences.. to Role Play Fun!

Flying Start @ Duchy have used real life experiences to inform their daily role play…

The child have been out on a trip to the local post office to get some information on what happens at a post office, where you can post letters and what you need to do this!

They bought a postcard, wrote it, bought a stamp and posted it back to themselves at nursery!

This has helped the children to link their play to real life experiences, remembering they need to use money to pay in the post office and needing a stamp to make sure the post gets to where it needs to go.

The children also visited a shop to buy a loaf of bread, using money again and counting out how much money was needed before taking the bread back to nursery with them!

The children now have a shop and post office role play at nursery to play in, posting letters and buying groceries from each other.

They are starting to count out money, learn the paying concept and using words like more and less.

Try giving your child the pennies in a shop and encourage them to ‘buy’ ‘pay’ and ‘count’!!

Flying Start @ Saltash’s Reading Focus!

Flying Start @ Saltash are promoting reading with all ages!

The children have access daily to lovely books, some are factual about animals and life cycles or people who help us, some fictional with magical stories of dinosaurs and adventures and some are simply picture books to promote those first important words…. the message through all of the books is, it doesn’t matter what it is about as long as we are encouraging our children to read!

BookStart book bags have been given out recently with some lovely books in them for you to share at home, and Flying Start also run a book bag loan scheme so please speak to your key worker for more information!

Flying Start @ Duchy Spell It Out!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s Pre-Schoolers have been focusing on letters recently!

They have been using songs and phonics to help them remember which letter stands for which sound… so you might have heard lots of sounding out!

We have been talking lots about each persons name, and sounding them out to hear each separate sound. When we have listened to the sounds we use our letter wall to find the letter and build our name!

With pretend traffic lights, traffic cones and signs the older children direct the bikes around the garden and practice important traffic control!

Using milk crates, wooden blocks, and any other construction materials they have in the garden the children build, balance and create structures…remembering safety first with their high vis jackets and hard hats!

The children see a lot of builders going to and from in the car park and over to the rugby club and are planning a trip for some more role play inspiration soon!
