Flying Start @ Duchy’s Golden Rules…

The children in the baby and toddler room at Flying Start @ Duchy have been making golden rules!

The oldest babies joined the toddlers in thinking about how to be kind to each other and the appropriate way to behave at nursery.

To make it understandable to the children they used photographs to highlight this.

The golden rules are on display at the children’s height with the photographs to remind them of the right choices to make, which supports positive behaviour management.

Flying Start @ Penryn Weigh It Up In The Garden!

Flying Start @ Penryn have been using measuring scales outside!

The purpose built set of scales is in the garden ready to measure different quantities of different materials to see which is heavier or lighter.

The children carefully transport their material usually sand, soil or water and then pour it into one end of the scales, as it tips they then guess how much of a different material they need in the other side to balance it out!

This is great hands on active learning with lots of trial and error, opportunities to make predictions and keeping on trying until it balances out!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s Picnic in the Forest!

Flying Start @ Duchy get out to the Forest for some splashing about and then a picnic snack!

The children wanted to make the most of the good weather, so they got togged up and headed out to the Forest for an afternoon in the fresh air.

Finding big puddles of course was the perfect opportunity to have a splash, a stomp and a stride in their wellies!

Then it was time to stop off in a sunny spot for a picnic snack…

Next time I think we would all like an invite!

Flying Start @ Helston Rescue Teddy With Their Tree Surgery!

Flying Start @ Helston visited St George’s Park to meet with one of their Dad’s who is a Tree Surgeon!

The children got to try on the safety kit that Tree Surgeons must wear, such as helmets and harnesses,

They learnt about what a Tree Surgeon does and watched this also!

Then after finding Teddy in the park, they got to rescue him! Using ropes, pulleys and working out which bit to hold still and which bit to pull they managed to rescue Teddy from the tree and bring him to safety with the Tree Surgeons kit!

Thankyou to the Dad for sparing his time to teach the children about his job and  making it fun and exciting too!

Flying Start @ Penryn’s Water Wall!

Flying Start @ Penryn have created a Water Wall in their garden!

Using tubes, pipes, funnels and other resourceful equipment the staff have created an exciting water station for the children.

Using jugs and cups the children pour water, choosing which pipe or funnel it is going to go down and then watch it as it finds its way to the bottom and lands with a splash at their feet in a tray!

The water can run in different directions and at different speeds so the children have started to race and guess who’s will get to the bottom first!

A fantastic learning opportunity outside for motor skill development, developing an awareness of quantities, speed and first hand science in action!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s Children Plan, Visit, Make and Pretend In Their Roleplay!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s children have used their initiative in full flow, to build a role play!

The staff have recently been on some training on creating effective role play opportunities for the children and stripped it back to basics in following the children’s lead for a role play that they feel excited about, as it is using their ideas and interests.

First of all the staff and children sat down to make their plan of action …

They planned to go on a trip around their campus to see what they could find, and if this would spark up some interest!

They found lots of different animals that the children could name, they took photographs of what they saw and the people they met along the way.

Then the children were very excited about making a tractor to drive.. so they set to work!

Cutting, painting, sticking and building…

A tractor! Fit for a farmer!

The children’s role play is all about caring for animals and the land, whether that be in the tractor, feeding the ducks or identifying animals through their binoculars!

What else do you think they could add to this to extend the children’s play?

Flying Start @ Helston’s Garden Fun!

Flying Start @ Helston have been focusing on improving their outdoor learning opportunities!

The children love to be outside, but it was looking a bit weathered and needing a boost.. so children and staff have been busy doing this!

If you go and visit now, you will see newly potted plants in tyres that the children did in gardening club!

You will also see interesting small world play like the dinosaurs making dens in the plants…

Nature detective cards and photos encourage the children to go on bug hunts, and the roleplay on the decking keeps the children busy.. currently a building construction site! (Although it changes regularly with the children’s interests!)

Of course regular mud / bark/ flower/ soil / sand potions and cakes must also be made!

Look out for more garden fun.. in the sun!

Flying Start @ Saltash’s Interesting Art!

Flying Start @ Saltash have been getting creative…

The children love mark making with chalks, pencils, crayons, paint and with anything else they can experiment with!

The more unusual the more exciting!

The animals had very colourful foot prints today, as they stomped through the paint and onto the paper.

And outside spray bottle with coloured water left interesting marks, the older children started to explore the changes in their marks from holding the bottle close to the paper and further away whilst also watching the colours run and mix together, whilst the younger children concentrated hard on strengthening their hand grip and fine motor skills with lots of careful squeezing and squirting!

What else do you think the children use in their creative play?

Flying Start @ Helston Making The Most Of The Weather!

Flying Start @ Helston get out and about to enjoy the fresh air and start of Summer!

The children and staff have been enjoying getting out into the local community for a walk and some fresh air recently!

Making the most of the warmer sunshine and changes in the environment, finding flowers growing and lots of birds, butterflies and wildlife.

Flying Start @ Duchy are getting very independent!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s children are gaining independence by the day!

The children are starting to show strong life skills and determination within their daily routine… have you noticed this at home?

Wanting to put their own socks and shoes on, or trying to do up their zip!

duchy

Now at nursery the toddler and preschool children are practicing pouring their own milk at snack time and serving their food at lunch time … these are all closely supervised and in a minimised risk environment so that it is the safest way for children to take challenges and build their resilience and skills, whether this be in physical play, toiletting, self care or artistic flair we want all of our Flying Start children to be independent confident little learners!
