And found ice!

There were little shards of ice hiding in the bark, and then larger patches covering puddled ready to be broken with some big welly boot stomping!

The children always check the weather in the morning and update their weather board but this time it was a little more exciting than wind or rain!

Outside they have been collecting leaves and sticks and then using them to create outdoor leaf pictures, stamping them into paint and then identifying their prints on the paper. With support the children recognise the different shapes and sizes of the natural objects.

Keep an eye on the blog for more news of what the children @ Flying Start Saltash are enjoying and exploring!

With different lava lamps, and fibre-optic lights the children’s attention was grabbed! They were touching and feeling them to explore them and pointing and exclaiming when the lights changed colour!

Learning about tidal changes, the weather, sea safety and stranger danger using their first hand experiences and carefully planned sessions from their Beach School Leader!

Flying Start @ Helston’s Healthy Cooking!

Flying Start @ Helston have kick started a Healthy January!

image_pract_58

Cooking club is a great way for the children to explore different foods using their hands, tasting, smelling and looking. They also practice their control and hand eye coordination when using utensils or knives, and start to understand where their food comes from!

And the children are always so proud of something that they have baked!!

This week they made ‘Hedgehog Bread’ ,making the dough and then after kneading with their hands they used scissors to create their hedgehog spikes!

Flying Start @ Penryn’s Science in Action!

Flying Start @ Penryn have been putting their science into action… and into food!

The toddlers have been exploring mixing liquids, with colourings and seeing the changes! Learning that they can guess what is going to happen!

image_pract_25

They have also been mixing different consistencies, adding more liquid as they go and finding out it gets easier to mix.

Here the children were mixing colourings to find the perfect colour for some cupcakes they were baking!

The pre-schoolers have been making soup in their cooking club, they chopped and prepared the vegetables before discussing what needed to happen to the vegetables to turn it into soup,

image_pract_152

The children were guided to think about how we could make the hard carrots and turnip soft and able to be whizzed together to make soup.

The childrenĀ discussed how really hot water cooks the vegetables, and when they are cooked they feel and taste different, especially softer!

The children checked the soup lots prodding the vegetables to see if they were soft yet, soft enough to mash and then soft enough to whizz into a soup… then they just couldn’t wait so ate their soup for snack!

Flying Start @ Duchy’s Finger Gym Fun!

Flying Start @ Duchy do daily Finger Gym!

The children have been getting their fingers working and active with lots of different fine motor activities…

GetAttachment (10)

Threading pipe cleaners into a colander’s holes, using tongs and large tweezers, threading, pointing, poking and squeezing are all just some of the activities which help focus their brain and develop control and strength in their hands!

This helps in time to support mark making control, using cutlery, and general hand-eye coordination.

As well as this they have been using dough to have a dough disco!

Lots of patting, squeezing, stretching and rolling of playdough in their hands… in time to the music! Now that’s what you call multi-tasking!
